A Client’s Journey: Downsizing, Finding a Home, and Community

Carrol’s journey to finding her new home began with a heartfelt decision to downsize and move closer to her younger grandchildren in Virginia. Having lived in northern Michigan, Carrol had watched her older grandchildren grow up and realized it was time for a change. Downsizing and relocating were big steps, but she found support from Gary Hughes, a trusted Century 21 Realtor highly recommended by her Realtor in Michigan. She shared that she was Presbyterian, and it turned out that Gary not only attended the same denomination but was a member of the same church Carrol and her husband had visited years before. Carrol soon joined the choir alongside Gary’s wife, which added to her sense of belonging in her new community.

Ultimately, they found the ideal downsized home in Kingstowne. Gary recommended a first-floor unit, which he knew would be a perfect fit for Carrol. The home provided everything she wanted: two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and the convenience of no stairs—a feature especially attractive for anyone considering downsizing. Carrol recalls, “I walked in and I said, ‘Ooh, this is nice.’ It felt like coming home.” Her move wasn’t just about finding a new house; it was about creating a new chapter in a welcoming community.

After four years in Kingstowne, Carrol decided it was time to transition once again, this time to a senior living community. Greenspring caught her interest, offering amenities and a supportive environment ideal for her next stage of life. Once again, Gary was there to help sell her home and make the downsizing process smooth. Not only did Gary’s team expertly manage the sale, but they also went above and beyond on moving day, unpacking Carrol’s boxes and arranging her space. While other residents were still settling in, Carrol’s new home was ready on day one, thanks to Gary’s team. “I wouldn’t call any other Realtor,” Carrol says, reflecting on the trust and friendship that had grown over the years.
